We focus on real combat scenarios and go through tough training to prepare you for anything that might come your way. When facing real life threats, you need to know the skills that will help you survive and get home! The four main styles that make up the basis of our self-defence program: Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Kali/silat.

ALEX KLESCHELSKY
Weapons trainer
As a member of Burnaby based private group Ikatan Kali Alex has been practicing Filipino martial arts for the last four years. His instructor, Guro Louie Lindo, is a well known Kali authority; he is highly respected and recognized by FMA practitioners around the world.
Four years of Kali training combined with 30 years of Kyokushin Karate experience make coach Alex a valuable asset to Modern Warrior.
CODY OSBORN
Ground and Grappling
Cody has experience in freestyle and collegiate style wresting, as well as Brazilian Jiu- jitsu. Cody has been actively grappling in multiple disciplines for the last 10 years and wrestled varsity for the University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University. Jiu- Jitsu has always been Cody’s passion, but he understands the importance of having a wrestling background to become a more complete grappler. Grappling is a huge part of Cody’s life as he enjoys merging jiu-jitsu and wrestling techniques in all of his classes. Cody believes strongly in grappling as a tool to be used for self-defense because he can dictate the situation and control the threat without harming anyone in the process. Jiu-jitsu truly is the gentlest mixed martial art but can also be the most effective when applied correctly. Cody is excited to bring his knowledge and skills to his students and ensuring that they are fully equipped to face all combative situations.
SASHA TADAYONI
Mixed Martial Arts
Sasha has been training as a martial artist for over 23 years and has been fighting competitively at the amateur, national, and international level for the last 13 years. He is well versed in various different arts such as: Kyokushin karate, boxing, Muay Thai, North American kickboxing, wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. He has trained in several countries including Germany, Japan, Iran, Canada and the United States. He is a student of, and trained directly under Shihan Makoto Nakamura (two time world kyokushin Karate Champion) when he was only 19 years old.
CRUZ VELASQUEZ
Wrestling
Cruz has wrestled now for going on 15 years in collegiate (American folkstyle) wrestling as well as the Olympic styles of Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling with over 130 victories at the NCAA Collegiate level. With his sights set on the Canadian World Team in 2025 and the 2028 Olympic Team, Cruz remains an active force in the arena, seamlessly transitioning between athlete, coach, and competitor.
The Modern Warrior ethos empowers him to intricately meld these three wrestling styles, crafting a multifaceted arsenal of tactics for takedowns, controls, restraints, and escapes — a virtuoso in self-defense and the art of combat sports.
Jason Hartstein
Boxing
Jason has spent the past five years training alongside top-level amateurs and professional fighters, developing a keen eye for the nuances of boxing as a martial art. Recognizing his exceptional ability to identify and extrapolate details in both technique and boxing IQ through observation, Jason transitioned into coaching. He has since trained professional fighters and mentored promising prospects in the amateurs, including a provincial gold medalist. Known for his technical and flashy padwork style, which he has refined under the guidance of elite trainers from around the world, Jason’s fighters value his unique ability to translate detailed observations into effective methodologies.
Now a fully trained NCCP Boxing coach & Modern Warrior Instructor, Jason is eager to build a team of dedicated and passionate individuals who share his ambition of pushing boxing to new heights and achieving success at the highest levels of competition.
Abby Lloyd
Judo
With an enduring passion for grappling sports, Abby, our esteemed instructor, has cultivated a remarkable journey through various disciplines, with judo standing out as her initial and enduring love. Abby embarked on her judo odyssey at the age of 6, propelling herself to the national and international stage. Her accolades include an impressive record of 5 national championship victories and active participation in two cadet world championships. Notably, Abby seamlessly integrated jiu jitsu into her training, adding depth to her judo groundwork.
Post high school, Abby’s exceptional skills were recognized, leading to her recruitment onto the SFU varsity wrestling team. Over her four years of eligibility, she not only attained All-American status but also secured a national title in her senior year. Grappling, in its diverse forms, has undeniably played a pivotal role in shaping Abby’s life. Now, with immense gratitude, she embraces the opportunity to share this passion with others.

SEIYU KIDS CLASS
A fun filled class that teaches kids all the etiquette and manners that comes with learning martial arts. Students will progress through belts, however achieving that black belt rank will require a great deal of training, patience and commitment.

ADULTS SEIYU KARATE
Adults Seiyu karate taught under the organization Kyokushin Kaikan Nakamura, is a style focused on practical movements and skills. This is a full contact karate so this is not for the feint of heart. Come in to learn a traditional martial art and find out where all combat sports styles started.

JIUJITSU SELF-DEFENCE
This class is based off of Brazilian jiujitsu, Judo and Olympic wrestling. Learn how to maneuver, strike, grapple, control, break limbs and most important, get back up. We ask that all students come with a towel, long pants as well as a long sleeved shirt for training.

BOXING CLASS

Learn from our Boxing coach Jason, this class focusses on Boxing fundamentals from the basics to competitive strategy.

Learn from a Canadian National competitor Cruz Valasquez, well-trained wrestlers, judo and jujitsu practitioners. 4 different associations, 3 styles, all coming together under one roof to further our progression in the combative arts and expand on self protection.

KALI WEAPONS SELF-DEFENCE
Kali Weapons self-defence will be a course taught by Sensei Alex who has years of experience in training kali; knife defence, movement and rule of law of canada will be taught in this class. This class will focus primarily on kali training, with sticks and knives, learning how to disarm, attack and survive altercations with a weapon if running isn’t an option.
